Whether this will be your first or fourth, you have to plan your scuba dive well. Scuba diving isn't like any other swimming activity where you just bring your favorite swim suit and a few changes of clothing. It involves much more planning, but in the end, all your hard work will be worth it.

In order to stay safe while underwater and make scuba diving a wonderful experience, you should ensure that you are able to get a proper training before you dive in. Scuba diving isn't a sport that you can learn all by yourself. You have to consult the expertise of scuba diving instructors and undergo some specialized trainings to familiarize yourself with the ins and outs of scuba diving.

If you're planning to scuba dive over the weekend, the first thing you should check is if you're physically fit for the challenge. Aside from being a decent swimmer, you have to pass a certain fitness level. Scuba diving could be fatal to those who aren't physically strong enough. If you're not sure about your level of fitness, you can try talking about your scuba diving plans with your doctor.

Even if you're just planning to make scuba diving a one-time experience during your vacation in the tropics, you have to go through a basic scuba diving course. Most resorts have dive shops and scuba diving courses. You may want to check on these. Knowing the basics of scuba diving will enable you to go scuba diving, but you will need proper supervision from scuba diving professionals to ensure that your scuba diving experience will be as safe as possible.

When you're about a hundred feet below the surface, pressure builds up and your body starts reacting to too much nitrogen in your bloodstream. When this unexpected difficulty happens, you might not be able to think clearly. In fact, you could start panicking, which isn't advisable when you're underwater. That's why, it is important to have proper training.

With proper training, you'll be able to plan your dive. So when you're feeling a bit nervous while underwater, you don't have to think about what you need to do, you just have to follow your dive plan.

To help you achieve your dive plan, you will need some scuba diving equipment, such as a dive computer. A dive computer calculates and displays your dive depth, ascent rate, time, etc. These details are very helpful to prevent any decompression or pressure related injuries. These injuries such as Nitrogen Narcosis, could be fatal to divers.

Once you've tried scuba diving and you've enjoyed it so much that you want to make it your lifetime sport, you will have to go a little further with your scuba diving training. There is a lot of recognizing scuba diving training agencies where you can get your certification.

A Basic Certification in scuba diving involves both theoretical and practical aspects of the course. You can work in a swimming pool or diving school and pass written exams on diving to get certified. Once of the toughest challenges a diving student may face during his certification courses is learning to use a dive table. Usually, a student will undergo a dive operation using a giant dive table. Hopefully, this will aid him in mastering the subject.

An Open Water Certification on the other hand, will require you to go somewhere, maybe in the tropical areas, where scuba diving is in season. Children who are 14 years old or younger won't be able to get fully certified, but if they plan to obtain a full certification soon, they can enroll themselves in some scuba diving classes to prepare them.

A good diving course will also teach you how to properly select, care and use scuba diving gears. Of course, you will learn how to scuba dive safely, even without any supervision. By taking up a scuba diving course, you can improve on your breathing techniques and other scuba diving skills to make your diving experience more enjoyable.

So if you're up to the exciting scuba diving challenges, then get started, breathe deeply, and dive just right in. Scuba diving could be your ticket to an extreme underwater adventure.

This is a considerable investment but it is a piece of Scuba Diving Equipment that is very necessary for a diver to be both safe and independent. A dive computer is an essential tool that tells you key information that allows you to dive safely and therefore having your own is quite important. Purchasing your own dive computer will allow you to select one of the highest quality and highest functioning. You will be able to get used all the functions and get familiar with it with each dive.

 

Whether you decide to buy all the equipment you need for diving or just a selected few pieces it is important that you choose gear which is produced by a reputed manufacturer and is made maintaining the highest quality.

I would like to know if i need to go through the extra expense of buying a second one for my wife. They are very expensive. Surely using the dive tables and a single computer is ok? Or is this not recommended? Or is it a definite no-no?

I did a lecture on Altitude Diving last night and it made me thing about putting a "Tip Sheet" together. Following is a list of tips to remember when Altitude Diving.

1. Any dive between 1000 feet and 10,000 feet is an Altitude Dive

2. There is relatively little test data for altitude diving, flying after diving or driving to altitude after diving.

3. At sea level, the diver is surrounded by one atmosphere of pressure. At 10,000 feet, the pressure is .714 atmospheres (a 30% decrease in pressure). This is the same pressure change as 10 feet of seawater, which we know makes a big difference in our no-decompression limits. As we'll see, this must be accounted for when using the RDP or any other dive table or dive computer.

4. Besides decompression sickness, there are heightened concerns for Hypoxia and Hypothermia when divng at Altitude.

5. Unless the actual depth is converted to a theoretical depth for table use and special procedures are followed, at altitude the pressure ratio can exceed the maximum limit intended by the table or dive computer, increasing the possibility of decompression sickness.

6. There are several equipment considerations when diving at altitude: (1) Air, trapped inside the cells of a wetsuit, expands at altitude, possibly making you more buoyant. Do a buoyancy check. (2) Different Gauges act differently at altitude, check with your gauge manufacturer and know what kind of gauge you have and how altitude effects it. (3) Computers either automatically adjust for altitude, need to be manually adjusted for altitude or have no adjustment for altitude. Know your computer!

7. When using an RDP or Table to plan your dive, consult the Theoretical Depth Conversion chart first and plan your dive using your theoretical depth, not your actual depth. Adjust your safety stop accordingly.

8. Ascend from depth on an altitude dive at a rate not to exceed 30 feet per minute. Safety stops are mandatory on all dives.

9. Make no more than two dives per day when diving altitude.

10. When arriving at altitude, wait 6 hours for your body to acclimitize or adjust your dive profiles to account for the residual nitrogen in your system as a result of the increase in altitude. When diving above 8000 feet, always wait 6 hours.

11. When using charts and tables, always round conservatively - whether it be up or down.

12. Consult your certification agency or Divers Alert Network for recommendations on altitude or flying after diving. It is generally recommended not to increase your altitude more than 2000 feet for a period of 24 hours after diving.

13. Do not make repetitive dives at different altitudes. Always wait a minimum of 6 hours when diving between altitudes.

14. If you are diving at altitude, seek proper training and get certified. Tip sheets and articles found on the Internet are no substitute for training. Dive within your training limits.

Having just taken up diving I have come to realise just how convenient it is to own your scuba diving equipment. While most dive centres do have basic scuba diving equipment that you can rent, you are never assured of quality, the correct sizes or cleanliness.

 

It is true that scuba diving equipment is a considerable investment not only because of the cost but also because you need to make sure that the diving equipment is of the highest quality and standard.  Not everyone can afford to buy all the scuba diving equipment at once, so here is a list of the basics that you might want to invest in.

 

Dry Suits:

To ensure that you stay protected from hypothermia and the elements while diving it is essential that you invest in a good dry suit. The suit should fit you well and be snug enough to keep you warm but should not be too tight. It is important that you find a dry suit that fits you correctly, because a suit that is too large can increase your chances of hypothermia, whereas a suit that is too tight will be restrictive and painful to wear.

 

Regulators:

One very important piece of scuba diving equipment is the regulator set. The regulator set consists of the first stage, second stage (both primary and alternate), hoses and sometimes the dive consoles. You can choose to buy these separately or as a set. If you are unable to invest in the whole set at one time then it might be better to purchase the primary second stage first. Having your own primary second stage regulator is beneficial since you know do not have to worry about hygiene or quality. When renting you are never really certain about how hygienic the regulators are since many other people have used them.

 

Dive Computers:

Another important piece of scuba diving equipment is the dive computer. Whether you invest in a basic dive computer or one that is state of the art, having your own dive computer is essential. Dive computers are handy at telling you the depth at which you are at, calculating ascent time, dive time, and many more functions. To be an independent diver it is essential that you have a dive computer.

 

These are just three essential pieces of scuba diving equipment that you can invest in first to ensure that you have comfortable and safe dives. Whether you start with just purchasing one item or all the scuba diving equipment at once it is well worth having your own.
