Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ - Scuba diving equipment

Having just taken up diving I have come to realise just how convenient it is to own your scuba diving equipment. While most dive centres do have basic scuba diving equipment that you can rent, you are never assured of quality, the correct sizes or cleanliness.

It is true that scuba diving equipment is a considerable investment not only because of the cost but also because you need to make sure that the diving equipment is of the highest quality and standard.  Not everyone can afford to buy all the scuba diving equipment at once, so here is a list of the basics that you might want to invest in.

Dry Suits:

To ensure that you stay protected from hypothermia and the elements while diving it is essential that you invest in a good dry suit. The suit should fit you well and be snug enough to keep you warm but should not be too tight. It is important that you find a dry suit that fits you correctly, because a suit that is too large can increase your chances of hypothermia, whereas a suit that is too tight will be restrictive and painful to wear.

Regulators:

One very important piece of scuba diving equipment is the regulator set. The regulator set consists of the first stage, second stage (both primary and alternate), hoses and sometimes the dive consoles. You can choose to buy these separately or as a set. If you are unable to invest in the whole set at one time then it might be better to purchase the primary second stage first. Having your own primary second stage regulator is beneficial since you know do not have to worry about hygiene or quality. When renting you are never really certain about how hygienic the regulators are since many other people have used them.

Dive Computers:

Another important piece of scuba diving equipment is the dive computer. Whether you invest in a basic dive computer or one that is state of the art, having your own dive computer is essential. Dive computers are handy at telling you the depth at which you are at, calculating ascent time, dive time, and many more functions. To be an independent diver it is essential that you have a dive computer.

These are just three essential pieces of scuba diving equipment that you can invest in first to ensure that you have comfortable and safe dives. Whether you start with just purchasing one item or all the scuba diving equipment at once it is well worth having your own.

Avoid Scuba Diving Risks

Scuba Diving definitely gets the adrenaline flowing. The concept of life without scuba diving terrifies me, as I will have to face the boring reality of normal life. I am not a typical adrenaline junkie, chasing the next "high". Instead I prefer escaping deep under the ocean; this is one place that I feel in touch with nature and at peace with myself. However, if you are new to scuba diving, there are some important things you need to know.

A scuba diving computer can be a divers best friend. It will allow you to stay down longer than if you were diving off of tables. There are many types and/or styles of dive computers you can choose from. Which one is best is really personal preference and is suited to the way you dive. The following are some of the choices you will have when purchasing your dive computer.

Console Dive Computer

A console dive computer is attached to the rest of the equipment via a hose. The console dive computers typically come with a pressure gauge. The readouts are typically larger than on a wrist dive computer so they can also be easier on the eyes.

There are also options for a scuba dive computer to be mounted on your hose (this is the type we currently use) or clip onto your BC. Choose whichever is more comfortable for you and fits into your price range.

Wrist Dive Computer

The wrist dive computer is very popular. These types of computers look like large watches and are worn on the wrist. They will tell you all you need to know at a glance. Some wrist dive computers are also able to be mounted in a console.

Sometimes the faces may be a bit small for all the information the computer can display, so make sure you will be able to read it underwater.

Unless they are air integrated and wireless (see below) wrist dive computers usually do not come with a pressure gauge. One small disadvantage here is that these can be pretty easy to misplace/lose.

Air Integrated Dive Computer

Air integrated dive computers are becoming more commonplace. An air integrated computer measures the tank pressure and then calculates how much more time you have left at the current rate of air consumpetion. The air integrated dive computer will tell you how much time you can spend at any exertion level.

An air integrated computer replaces the need for a submersible pressure gauge (SPG). One downside of an air integrated computer is that if it fails, you lose information on how much air you have left in your tank. Dive over.

Nitrox Dive Computer

With nitrox diving becoming more and more common, so are computers that are nitrox compatible. Even if you aren't diving with nitrox now, if you are even thinking of diving with nitrox in the future, it is probably worth it to purchase a nitrox dive computer. This will save you the expense of buying a whole new computer in the future. However, if don't think you will ever dive with nitrox, then there is no reason to pay for this feature. A standard air computer is probably $100+ less than its nitrox counterpart.

Hoseless Dive Computer

The hoseless dive computer consists of the receiver (typically worn on the wrist or mounted on the BC) and a transmitor. The transmitor attaches to the high pressure port of the regulator first stage and then sends your air information, wirelessly, to the receiver. The receiver looks the same as normal dive computers.

This setup cuts down on the number of hoses you need. There are now even hoseless dive computers that can accept signal from multiple transmitors - so you can even keep an eye on your buddies air consumption. Of course, this capability is really for the more advanced technical divers who may use different tanks on one dive. And, of course, we are talking some pretty high price tags here.

So just think about how you dive and what capabilities you need. The right dive computer for one person can be completely wrong for another person. Choose one that you are comfortable with and one that is right for you wallet.

Suunto Vector Wrist-Top Computer Watch with Altimeter, Barometer, Compass, and Thermometer (xBlack)

51QD53H9VZL. SL160 Dive Computer Watch ReviewsVector was the 1st multi functioning wristop computer from Suunto. Functions include but are not limited to Time, Altimeter, barometer, compassThe Suunto Vector X Wristop Computer is the answer to the challenges faced by outdoor enthusiasts all around the world. To play safely in the wilderness, it's vital to know your playground, and the Suunto Vector X can help you to do just that. A truly amazing instrument, the Suunto Vector X is designed to give you the most accurate, real-time information about your surroundings that you can get anywhere. Regardless of whether you are climbing mountains, riding a muddy bike track, or skiing off piste, the Suunto Vector X will never let you down. It combines an altimeter, barometer, and an electronic compass with all the features of a sophisticated sports watch. The clear logic of the user interface makes Suunto Vector X a real help on the mountain. Its ergonomic design with a large display, electro-luminescent backlight, convenient control buttons, and user-replaceable battery makes it easy to use even in the harshest and toughest conditions. For backcountry and skiing enthusiasts, the Suunto Vector X is loaded with features that will help to keep you safe in the most demanding of situations. The watch's altimeter has a range up to 9,000 meters (29,500 feet), with a one-meter resolution. It also features an altitude difference measurement function for following vertical progress between stages. It has an automatic 24-hour memory that stores the altitude and ascent/descent rate for every hour and an adjustable altitude alarm and several memory functions. With the logbook function, for instance, you can record total and cumulative vertical ascents and descents, as well as the number of runs skied. The barometric functions provide you with valuable information for forecasting weather changes. Information on the present sea level pressure helps you read and understand the barometric pressure at high altitudes. The Vector's compass shows the cardinal or half-cardinal point abbreviated and indicates north with an arrow. It can be set to track a certain bearing, and graphically show the difference between it and the actual bearing. This is a valuable tool when trying to get back on track after minor or major detours in the terrain. The declination adjustment function allows the user to correct the difference between true north and magnetic north. These features all combine to provide you with vital information that will help you make safe and responsible decisions during your excursions. The Suunto Vector X automatically records barometric data for the past four days: the first six hours in one-hour intervals and after that in six-hour intervals. When the reference altitude is set correctly, the instrument also shows the present sea level pressure, which makes it easier to read and understand the barometric pressure at high altitudes. In addition to its invaluable outdoor-related functions, the Suunto Vector X also displays normal time. It has three daily alarms, a calendar programmed to the year 2089, and a stopwatch with split time measurement and a countdown timer. The time can be shown in 12 or 24-hour format. In short, the Suunto Vector is an outdoor enthusiast's dream -- a beautifully engineered watch that's versatile enough for the world's highest peaks as well as everyday use.

Suunto Vector Wrist-Top Computer Watch with Altimeter, Barometer, Compass, and Thermometer (xBlack) Reviews

Review by Kevin Woodward: 4 Dive Computer Watch Reviews

51QD53H9VZL. SL75 Dive Computer Watch ReviewsI've owned the Suunto Vector for more than three years after purchasing it when I first became interested in adventure racing. While many top racers wear it, I would highly recommend it for the serious hiker, climber or backcountry skier for it's solid construction, design and versatility.

While I also wear this as my everyday watch, it's extra large size should be taken into consideration if that's something you have in mind.

There are a couple other brands available in this market segment, but the relatively low price and exceptional feature set are what continues to set this tool apart from the crowd.

Here's what you should know:

* Expect to replace the battery at least once a year. This is due to a number of reasons, one of which is the powerful backlight on the face that when activated can nearly illuminate the inside of a small tent at night. If you believe the manufacturer's warnings and want to play it safe, you may want to have this procedure performed by a professional (watch, not outdoor) shop. Suunto sells a battery pack that comes with a replacement seal and screw-in back, and this is definitely something to consider every other replacement opportunity, but you can get by with a lower-cost Duracell type 2430 3V lithium if you're on a budget.

* The altimeter is one of the strongest features, allowing you to quickly pinpoint your location on a topo map. However, plan to reset it regularly, especially after a plane ride or frequent and significant changes in altitude, or weather. This is rather easy as along as you have a confirmed location metric, but you have to remember to do it regularly to ensure the greatest accuracy. The 24-hour memory provides a total measurement of your ups and downs (ascents and descents) over that time period, a really cool record for runners, mountain bikers and skiers.

* The compass is one of the strongest in this class of devices, which to be sure isn't the greatest to begin with ... but even the serious orienteerer would be impressed. The ability to adjust for local declination is really nice.

* The barometer is good, but not great. However, if you want to be aware of potential weather changes, this will provide you with some peace of mind. Better to be safe than sorry (or worse) in this regard.

* The thermometer isn't accurate at all unless you take the watch off for 15-20 minutes or so to eliminate the warming effect of your skin/body temperature.

* Some of the controls and settings are not easy to comprehend or remember. I've never been able to figure out how to use the stopwatch, timer and lap features. If you're a swimmer or triathlete and this is important to you, look to the Timex Ironman standby.

* Waterproofing is rock solid. No worries.

* The soft-rubber watchband is comfortable to wear, but will deteriorate over time, even more rapidly in chlorine. Suunto offers a much lighter nylon/velcro alternative that I personally prefer.

Overall, I really like the Vector. But for a number of reasons already mentioned, would not feel comfortable giving it a perfect 5.0 score. But consider my 4.0 more like a 4.7 ... you can't go wrong here.

Review by Jeff Edwards: 4 Dive Computer Watch Reviews

51QD53H9VZL. SL75 Dive Computer Watch ReviewsI am a watch collector, and in many instances, the bigger the better, and it truly IS difficult to find a timepiece bigger than your average Suunto Wristop Computer (other than the Observer). But despite its size, the Vector is quite comfortable on my wrist. It doesn't seem too bulky, and I know that sounds impossible to believe -- especially once you see the beast for the first time, but its true.

If you are an avid outdoor person, whether you're into hiking, mountain climbing or just a regular fisherman, you simply should NOT leave home without a device like this. First off it has a highly accurate digital altimeter, which admittedly needs regular calibration, but as long as you keep close track of what it says, you should have no trouble keeping up on exactly where you are above (or below) sea level. Next up is another widely under-used tool, a digital barometer. Sure it may SEEM intimidating -- at FIRST, but spend a few minutes closely reading the instruction manual, and you should have it down fairly quickly. I wouldn't say you could bet your life on the accuracy of this barometer, but it IS a LOT closer to predicting the real weather than any meteorologist I've ever encountered. I'd say it was around 80% correct -- and when was the last time you could say that about your local weatherman, huh? Also, the barometer features a built-in thermometer. Now again, for a totally correct temp reading you must take the watch off your wrist for about 15 minutes first, and as far as I am aware, all watches that feature this function must be done the same way, so keep that in mind before you look at your watch and declare it's 90 degrees when it is more likely 75. Finally the last nifty gadget crammed into this watch is a highly accurate digital compass. Once calibrated (and once again you may need to re-calibrate once-a-week or so to be spot-on) this compass gives you great assistance, especially for the avid hikers out there who rely on map reading in unfamiliar territory.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, it also can tell the time...it has an alarm and even a stopwatch. What will they think of next? The ONLY reason why the Vector received 4 stars instead of 5 is because despite how GOOD this timepiece really is, it really SHOULD have come with crystal or glass rather than a plastic face. I have the Suunto X-Lander which is pretty much a clone of the Vector built inside an aluminum body rather than plastic and comes with a mineral crystal face. The one thing the X-Lander is missing that the Vector has is the tiny bubble in the upper right of the watch face which is invaluable in taking accurate readings by knowing how level you are. REALLY helpful. I dunno, maybe it isn't possible to put a bubble inside of the glass face, but if it IS possible, they ought to think about doing that sometime soon.

One more thing: the various colors you can find the Vector help to make it as much an accessory to your hiking outfit as an invaluable tool needed for a safe trek. I personally like the yellow the best, but I was surprised at how cool the Khaki face looked, so I went ahead with that one.

All in all, if you are looking for something that will combine the incredible usefulness that the Vector has in such a small package, I would definitely say Suunto has another winner on their hands...or on their wrists, so to speak. Outstanding product.

Suunto D9 Wrist-Top Dive Computer Watch with Wireless Transmitter (Titanium)

512D0EBA6GL. SL160 Dive Computer Watch ReviewsSuunto D9 combines all dive-critical information in one instrument, conveniently mounted on your wrist. Instead of monitoring a multitude of gauges, you can concentrate on what is important - diving. The world's first dive computer to incorporate a digital compass, it is functional on land or under water. The compass shows the general direction with a graphical compass rose, as well as the exact bearing with a numerical display. By using Suunto D9's optional wireless transmitter, the diver can also monitor tank pressure and air consumption data from the wrist. The remaining tank pressure is displayed both numerically and graphically, and an estimation of the remaining air-time is given throughout the dive. This allows the diver to monitor the remaining air supply at the same time as he monitors depth and time.

  • World's first dive computer to integrate a digital compass and wireless tank data reception.
  • Memory stores compass headings and dive information to download for further analysis after your dive.
  • Set it titanium housing, also comes with Suunto Dive Manager and PC Interface.
