KEY FEATURES

The OC1 is a step up computer that is comprised of a dot matrix display, a digital compassand functionality to switch among three wireless transmitters. The latter allows for a buddy pressure-check function. 4 different dive genres handl 21% room air, EANx, technical gauge mode and freediving mode!, and the dot-matrix display is crisp and easy on the eyes. All of this comes wrapped in a strong, lightweight titanium housing. SmartGlo backlighting works great in low vizibility conditions and at night, and the system includes Oceanic's software Downside

Having had the ability to beta test this dive watch, I was impressed overall; and neutral on a couple of things. If you have failing eyesight, that sleekness of the unit doesn't lend to being more readable. I had to squint in my mask to see the display in low light. So if you have bad eyesight, perhaps the Oceanic ProPlus II is a better computer for you.

Secondly, the digital compass is a bit touchy (keep in mind this was one of the demo units, and probably has been fixed). It must be flat to read out the degree measurement.

Finally, with 5-7mm gloves (we dive this cold water of the Pacific) the buttons are a bit hard to manipulate, to change settings. Also, the computer is a very sophisticated piece of technology and a DVD that came with the computer with a step-by-step guide would be nice.

A scuba diving computer, which is better known as a dive computer, is a digital device that can do the task of managing nitrogen without requiring the diver to have a watch or dive table. As a combination of a timer and a depth gauge plus some intelligent software that helps to compute absorption of gases, the scuba diving computer is a popular device that is used by most experienced divers.

It is very necessary for the diver to know about remaining nitrogen as well as decompression and this may also be done by manual dive tables, but the scuba diving computer is much more valuable as it can greatly improve the dive experience through automation of the management of nitrogen.

In reality, the scuba diving computer will not plan a dive for the scuba diver, who is still solely responsible for correct and safe planning in conformance with health guidelines. On the other hand, the scuba diving computer will be able to keep track of the depth as well as time spent underwater, calculates the amount of nitrogen that the diver’s body contains and alerts the divers when these levels become too high and also helps the diver to take suitable decompression stops whenever necessary.

What Happens
When the diver performs a traditional scuba dive there are just two variables that are used to describe the dive and these are maximum depth as well as time. When one calculates the amount of absorbed nitrogen one assumes that the diver had plunged immediately to maximum depth and remained there for some time and later returned to the surface.

In such an instance, the dive profile is said to be square, because when graphed on an X-Y axis, for instance, it produces a rectangular like trench. However, in reality the dive is not like that and a diver would descend slowly, swim about and change depth to find his or her way around reefs or bottom formations and then slowly return back to the surface.

The main advantage of a scuba diving computer is that it allows for longer bottom lines and dive tables having a square profile are mostly conservative having exaggerated absorption which tends to lean towards the safe side. However, the scuba diving computer enables a curved profile and regularly allows the diver to stay submerged for longer periods of time.

Therefore, before choosing a scuba diving computer it may also be wise to check out the brand and model as well as ascertain whether the batteries easy to change, and is the computer’s interface easy to read and is it backlit or not?

The Suunto Gekko is one of the most popular scuba diving computers in the UK, especially among newly qualified scuba divers. This is because it offers all a basic scuba diver needs and is fairly cheap.

Gekko On Screen Display

When scuba diving the Suunto Gekko shows you all the vital information you need - by default the Gekko shows your current depth, maximum depth for the dive, current temperature and the remaining no-deco time - the time you can continue to dive for without needing to do a deco stop. These are displayed numerically and are very easy to read. You also see the ascent rate as a color-coded bar up the side of the screen which is handy for beginners.

Alarms and Lighting on Suunto Gekko

The Suunto Gekko does not come with a backlight, but rather has a phosphorescent display which can be charged using a dive torch to brighten up the screen during a dark dive - this saves on the battery drain a backlight would have, but also requires you to have a dive torch (although on a dark dive you should have one anyway). As far as alarms go, the Gekko has visual and audible alarms when needed, and also allows you to enable max depth and max time alarms if you want to.

Stored Dive Information & PC Interface

Unlike a lot of scuba diving computers these days the Suunto Gekko does not offer a PC interface to download dive information. It does however, store 50 hours of dive profile data including dive start time & date, total dive time, maximum depth and the temperature at the maximum depth - this is all you need to fill in your log book. As an added extra it also stores some other information in more succinct format - for example your maximum ever depth is also stored.

Nitrox on the Gekko

The Suunto Gekko does support Nitrox in the same way as most other scuba diving computers do; by treating air as 21% nitrox. The Gekko uses the Suunto RGBM - a state of the art algorithm for managing both dissolved gas and free-gas in all its stages in the tissues and blood of the diver - in plain English it is safe and you can trust it! To switch to Nitrox is very easy - the Gekko has two modes (air/Nitrox) which can be switched easily.

Ease of Use of the Gekko

Perhaps the main reason the Suunto Gekko is so popular is that it is very easy to use - you can basically forget about how to use it and concentrate on actually using it. Suunto have equipped the Gekko with user-replaceable batteries which saves you sending your Gekko back and forth every now and then. The batteries are very easy to change - you just have to unscrew a cover, then replace an O-ring and the battery then screw the cover back on - see a video showing how to change a Suunto Gekko battery.

Suunto Gekko - Summing Up

The Suunto Gekko is ideal for any scuba diver that does not require a PC-Interface or dive simulation features. You can buy the Suunto Gekko in wrist model or console mounted with a Suunto console. It is aimed squarely at recreational scuba divers who may intend to use Nitrox but don't want to pay extra for gas switching computers - most scuba divers in fact could save a lot of money by choosing the Suunto Gekko!

What are Dive Computer Algorithms?
The dive computer is used to calculate your maximum dive time which allows for a longer and safer dive. The dive computer as took over from the dive table as the diving tool to calculate all your necessary parameters to enjoy scuba diving.

Dive computers use algorithms to calculate these safe diving limits. They will make adjustments for both fast tissue groups and slow tissue groups. It uses this information to estimate the nitrogen in your body. Based on the amount of time you've been submerged and your depth, from this the computer then calculates how much longer you can safely remain underwater.

Different Type of Algorithms
Algorithms vary by model from each manufacturer and only a few algorithms are actually used. Some algorithm used may also be a modification of an existing algorithm. When you want to consider buying your next dive computer, the main feature to look at is the algorithm that the air decompression limit monitor uses.

Algorithms with different manufactures use some varying factors in their algorithms such as mentioned with fast and slow tissue groups. The solubility, permeability, and blood contact for a given tissue, say for example a kidney, is called a "tissue compartment or tissue group." Dive computers use these "tissue compartments" to simulate the effect of a gas on your body at depth. The more "tissue compartments" a computer measures, the more accurate (theoretically) the computer can gauge the effect of a dive on your body. 9 to 12 compartments is fairly standard, but a few consumer models have 16 or more.

Here are four of the main algorithms used for dive computers:

Group 1: Haldane/Spencer Algorithm
The Haldane/Spencer model uses test results from PADI's Diving Science and Technology and was developed by Rogers and Powell. Within their algorithm they use 12 separate tissue compartments. Oceanic and Sherwood use this algorithm model for their dive computers.

Group 2: Modified Haldanian Algorithm
This algorithm model was used by Mares and is based on nine tissue compartments. Now the latest Mares dive computers use the Reduced Gradient Bubble Model.

Group 3: Suunto Reduced Gradient Bubble Algorithm
This model is based in part on work by Wienke and Hamilton and uses nine tissue compartments. Suunto were the first to use the RGDM and now other manufactures are starting to use it too. The big difference of this algorithm is they consider micro bubbles that are in the blood stream as a result of nitrogen build up. The theory was they consider that these micro bubbles are a precondition of larger bubbles which can lead to DCS.

Group 4: Uwatec Buehlmann ZH-L8 ADT Algorithm and the ZH-L8 ADT MB.
This algorithm model uses eight tissue compartments and has been recently updated with two additional letters, the Buhlmann adaptive model has been expanded to be called the ZH-L8 ADT MB which stands for micro bubble. This algorithm is used by Uwatec and Scubapro.

Short fall of Algorithms
Algorithms may not be able to account for age, previous injury, ambient temperature, body type, alcohol consumption/dehydration, and patent foramen ovale(hole in the heart).

Which Algorithm is the best?
Removing of factors like cost, looks, other features etc then the more "tissue compartments" a computer measures, the more accurate (theoretically) the computer can gauge the effect of a dive on your body. 9 to 12 compartments are fairly standard nowadays, but a few dive computers are now using 16 compartments.

Even if two algorithms have the same results, manufactures will add there own factor of safety so they can set there dive computers to aggressive or conservative. An aggressive computer gives more bottom time than a conservative dive computer, and it's wise to understand the properties of one's own dive computer to ensure it fits the skill and comfort level expected.

Suunto D9 combines all dive-critical information in one instrument, conveniently mounted on your wrist. Instead of monitoring a multitude of gauges, you can concentrate on what is important - diving. The world's first dive computer to incorporate a digital compass, it is functional on land or under water. The compass shows the general direction with a graphical compass rose, as well as the exact bearing with a numerical display. By using Suunto D9's optional wireless transmitter, the diver can also monitor tank pressure and air consumption data from the wrist.
